What makes Thanksgiving Holiday Hash Soup so special?

Now, you might be wondering, ‘What makes this Thanksgiving Holiday Hash Soup so special?’ Well, aside from its mouthwatering flavors, it’s the delightful medley of unexpected ingredients that I add to give this traditional soup a twist. Think delicious tangy red onion, sweet potatoes, sweet Italian sausage, ditalini pasta, fresh herbs, and parmesan cheese.

I’ve even thrown in a few creative touches that will make your guests marvel at your culinary prowess, all while keeping the preparation hassle-free.

What you will need

  • Holiday Hash from Trader Joe’s (it’s seasonal so buy two and freeze one for later)
  • Red onion
  • Loose sweet sausage
  • Chicken Broth or Vegetable Broth
  • Ditalini pasta
  • Petite diced tomatoes
  • Cannelenni beans
  • Crushed red pepper, Garlic salt, Garlic Powder, Basil, Parsley, Oregano
  • Parmesan cheese

All of these Trader Joe’s items can be found on your next Trader Joe’s haul. No surprise here but I typically come out of Trader Joe’s with way more than I planned.

How to: Step by Step Soup

One of my favorite things is to use a cast iron skillet to saute in. I love how evenly cast iron heats. Feel free to use any stock pot, soup pot, or large skillet if you would rather use one pot or if you don’t have a cast iron skillet.

The beauty of this recipe is that you can easily saute your fresh veggies and sausage right in your stockpot.

  1. The first thing is to dice up your red onion and garlic,
  2. Next in a cast iron skillet, or stockpot, saute the fresh garlic and red onion along with the loose sausage until browned in a little olive oil for 6-8 minutes. (Approximately two tablespoons.)
  3. Once the sausage, garlic, and red onion are tender and soft add the Trader Joe’s Thanksgiving hash to the stockpot.
  4. If using the cast iron skillet method, the next step is to add the sausage and garlic mixture to your large stockpot.
  5. On medium heat add the can of diced tomatoes and Cannellini beans. (as an additional option: bell peppers may be added)
  6. Next, add the chicken broth or vegetable broth and spices.
  7. If adding pasta, cook per the instructions on the box, then drain and add to the stockpot.
  8. Cook on the stovetop for about thirty minutes.
  9. Top with parmesan cheese and serve with crusty bread.

Can I freeze Trader Joe’s holiday vegetable hash?

The short answer is yes! If you are lucky enough to have any leftover holiday vegetable hash the next day you can absolutely freeze it. It’s a great recipe you’ll want to have over and over.

It will freeze well for up to 3 months. To freeze, simply transfer the hash to a freezer-safe container or bag. When you’re ready to use it, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator or at room temperature for a few hours. You can then cook it on the stovetop, in the oven, or in the microwave.

Here are some tips for freezing Trader Joe’s holiday vegetable hash:

  • Freeze the hash before cooking it. This will help to preserve the texture and flavor of the vegetables. (I always buy two or three containers to keep in the freezer for other easy meals) (remember this is a seasonal item so keeping extra on hand, is handy!)
  • If you’re freezing cooked hash, be sure to cool it completely before freezing.
  • Label the freezer-safe container or bag with the date and contents.
  • You can cook the thawed hash on the stovetop, in the oven, or in the microwave.
