The Basics of Pumpkin Bread Icing

Most often pumpkin bread icing is made with the addition of cream cheese frosting. While that is absolutely delicious, a lighter option, in calories and ease, is to make your icing with ingredients like confectionery sugar, vanilla, milk, and for an additional twist, pumpkin pie spice. It doesn’t get easier, or tastier than this.

Why Icing is a must for pumpkin bread

Adding Pumpkin bread icing is not a strict necessity. Here’s the thing tho, it can enhance the flavor and presentation of the pumpkin bread in many ways.

Here are five top reasons to add icing to your pumpkin bread.

  1. Enhancing the Flavor: Icing adds a sweet and creamy contrast to the moist and spiced pumpkin bread. It complements the earthy, nutty flavors of the bread with a rich sweetness.
  2. Elevate the Eating Experience: The velvety smoothness of the icing creates a delightful addition to the robust and crumbly nature of pumpkin bread, elevating the overall eating experience.
  3. Visually Appealing: A well-iced pumpkin bread looks way more appealing and inviting. It can be decorated with patterns, colors, or garnishes, making it visually appealing, especially for special occasions.
  4. Personal Touch & Customization: Icing allows for customization. You can adjust the sweetness and flavor to suit your preferences, adding a personal touch to your pumpkin bread.
  5. Seasonal Variation: Depending on the spices and flavors you add to the icing, it can be tailored to match the autumnal or holiday season, adding a festive touch to your dessert.

Ultimately, whether or not you use icing on your pumpkin bread is a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer the simplicity of plain pumpkin bread, with warmed butter drizzled over it. Others prefer cream cheese icing, while others enjoy the added sweetness and texture that adding icing brings.

Quick Bread or Homemade Pumpkin Loaf?

The debate is on.

Which is the best way to make moist pumpkin bread? Is it following an easy pumpkin bread recipe out of a box? Or is it using fresh pumpkin to achieve that perfect pumpkin flavor?

For me, I love either. I haven’t had a pumpkin bread I didn’t like.

It’s up to you which one you prefer but I say, if making it out of the box is easier for you, then do it!

When you have more time, then give the homemade version a go. One thought is that homemade bread may be a better choice if you want to highlight the pumpkin’s taste. Let me know which one you prefer. I’d love to hear!

My tip is to consider your guests and decide which is better for you between these two. Like I said, any pumpkin bread is better than none at all. Your guests and family will appreciate either.

glass mixing bowl with two eggs in it

The quick option

I was short on time so I opted for the easier option. All I had to do was mix the wet ingredients in a large bowl. I added whole milk, vegetable oil (or canola oil), and two eggs and mixed on medium-high speed until well blended.

Next, using my hand mixer I blended the dry ingredients into the bowl. The next step was to pour the batter into a prepared loaf pan using my rubber spatula and bake for the appropriate length of time.
